Energy service company Scopus Engineering has appointed Mark Fraser as its new chief financial officer as the business targets further growth in the next 12 months.

Mr Fraser was previously based in Houston, USA, where he held the position of finance director within energy company Baker Hughes’ largest service product line. He also held lead financial roles with the same company across Europe and North Africa.

Turnover at Aberdeen-based Scopus, which provides dimensional control survey services to the global oil and gas industry, has risen from £15m for 2012 to £20.6m for its year-end in April 2013 – a rise of 37%.

Scopus Engineering employs a team of 210, including surveyors, engineers and 2D and 3D draughtsmen, with the majority based at its Dyce offices.

Earlier this year, Scopus Engineering announced a £13m investment from Growth Capital Partners (GCP) for a minority stake in the business, with founders and directors, Andy Inglis and Tom Bryce, remaining as majority shareholders.

John Forrest, a former senior vice-president with Talisman Energy, was appointed non-executive chairman following the investment from GCP.

Mr Forrest said: “We’re delighted to have added someone with Mark’s expertise to the management team at Scopus. His international financial experience and knowledge means he is ideally placed to lead our finance operations as we look to grow the business.”

Mark Fraser said: “Scopus Engineering has a bright future and the opportunity to be part of this dynamic company is a tremendously exciting one. I’m looking forward to helping grow the business both in the UK and internationally by using my experience of working in the energy sector.”

A qualified chartered accountant, Mr Fraser started his career at Aberdeen-based accounting firm Hall Morrice and specialised in technical and compliance roles before joining the energy sector.

Scopus Engineering also announced it has opened an Abu Dhabi office as part of its plans to develop the business in the Middle East. The company also has operations in Malaysia, Brunei and Azerbaijan.

Founded in 1991, Scopus Engineering is a provider of electronic survey and engineering services to the upstream oil and gas sector. Scopus is an industry leader in performing precision surveys offshore, capturing data for use in engineering and fabrication drawings using its own in-house developed processes and smart software.

With a strong position in the North Sea, Scopus Engineering’s clients include international oil companies and major contractors who use its services to support ongoing, essential maintenance work.

Willie Finlayson of FWB said ‘we are delighted to have helped Scopus make this key appointment at such an exciting stage of it’s development.’
