Business Director

About the role

St George’s School for Girls is a prominent all girls’ day and boarding school, set in parkland in the heart of Edinburgh. Established in 1888, St George’s is Scotland’s largest all girls’ school and the only all-through independent private school in Edinburgh for girls. Rated ‘Excellent’ by Education Scotland in 2015, St George’s consistently achieves outstanding results in both Scottish and English exam qualifications.

The arrival of a new Head in 2017 and subsequent strategic change has created the opportunity for St George’s to appoint a Business Director. This is a new position for the school and is designed to provide strategic leadership on all financial and commercial aspects of the school. The Business Director will also have overall responsibility for the management of the support functions of the school, including the design and set up of a new in-house finance team.

Responsible and accountable to the Council, and its constituent committees, the Business Director will report to the Head, sit on the Senior Leadership Team and Chair the Business Leadership Team.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Financial Management and Strategic Planning
  • Leadership and Development of Staff
  • Financial and Operational matters relating to OSCR
  • Health and Safety/Legal and Regulatory/Risk Management
  • Facilities Management, Catering and Operations
  • Commercial Development and Change Management
  • Clerk to the Council

We are looking to appoint an extremely bright, commercial and highly credible qualified accountant, with outstanding leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of success in financial management, combined with strong business acumen. With a well-rounded outlook and experience, the Business Director will be expected to contribute positively and enthusiastically to all aspects of school life.

This is not a residential post but the successful candidate will be expected to live within a commutable distance of Edinburgh, or be willing to relocate for this role. A background, understanding and affinity for the Charity sector, or Independent School environment, is strongly preferred.
