Centre Director

About the role

The Hong Kong Centre for Carbon Innovation (HKCCI) – the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation’s (ECCI) first international office and a Team Scotland partnership of ECCI, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, BRE Scotland and supported by the Scottish Government and Scottish Development International – is a new venture and will assist Scottish enterprises and organisations in the low carbon and renewables industry seeking to enter the Hong Kong and China market.

The HKCCI will act as a hub to bring together Scottish & Hong Kong talent, resources & ideas; create an incubation space for new low carbon ideas, products & projects; and will create a team dedicated to identifying, brokering and accelerating Scotland – Hong Kong partnerships.

The Centre’s creation builds on the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between the Hong Kong Government and the Scottish Government to develop closer partnerships between Hong Kong and Scotland to address the key challenges presented through climate change and the transition to a lower carbon economy.

The job purpose is to direct and develop the HKCCI business into a vibrant enterprise and innovation hub, which is self financing within one year to eighteen months. To develop and build relationships with Scottish and Hong Kong stakeholders. To identify and develop new commercial and academic funding and project partnership opportunities for the University of Edinburgh and the wider Scottish Hong Kong partnership, with a primary focus on low carbon innovation, learning and skills.

While the focus of the Centre is “low carbon”, the Centre Director need not be a ‘technical expert’ in the field.  It would be helpful if they were, but essentially they need to be a demonstrable self-starter; they need to understand the dynamics of doing and setting up business in Hong Kong / Southern China, and the networks that exist; have experience of developing a new venture from multiple funding streams (including the public sector); have experience of developing partnership opportunities (ideally within a university setting); and have an appreciation of the ‘SME’ sector.
