CEO, Ardtornish Estate

About the role

The Ardtornish Estate is privately owned, located in Morvern, south west Lochaber, on the west coast of Scotland. Attracting a large number of guests and visitors each year, the estate comprises excellent self-catering accommodation including a grade A mansion house, beautiful gardens and grounds, excellent sporting facilities, two successful hydro schemes with more under construction, a successful farm and forestry operations, and property development and management. Main Purpose of the role:

Reporting to the Board, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for contributing to, leading and delivering the Estate’s strategy to diversify income streams for the long-term sustainability of the organisation and the long-term interests of the community. The CEO heads a team of some 20 people and is responsible for the diverse activities on the Estate.
The key aspect of this role is to oversee investment into the property estate and grow income streams, including from energy, tourism, events and related sources. A leader who is able to inspire vision in the team and manage positive relationships with stakeholders will be important

Main responsibilities:

  • To lead and oversee delivery of board strategy
  • Full P&L operational responsibility for Ardtornish Estate
  • To advise the board and family to enable effective decision-making
  • To oversee diversification of estate income to include development of a visitor enterprise
  • Oversee development and report on project development e.g. further renewable energy projects
  • Finance and budgeting
  • Estates infrastructure including property development
  • Woodland and farm management
  • Staff leadership and policy development
  • Natural and cultural heritage
  • General estate management
  • Overseeing positive community relations

Key criteria of potential candidates:

  • Proven demonstrable leadership qualities
  • A knowledge of/interest in natural and cultural heritage, including woodland and farm management
  • Experience in the leisure industry/tourism/events or conference management would be advantageous, especially within a rural context
  • Experience in the property or renewable energy sector would be advantageous
  • Sympathetic to the aims of the Estate and family
  • Experience of community engagement philosophy
  • Financial acumen and budgetary control
  • Experience/knowledge of HR legislation and practice
  • Experience of rural living wold be advantageous
  • Holder of a full clean UK Driving Licence
