Chief Executive

About the role

Scran Academy is a dynamic charity on a mission to help young people achieve their full potential in learning, work and life, through transformational youth work and education programmes. Also a catering social enterprise, we aim to be an innovative and empowering service provider and employer.

There are an estimated 30,000+ young people in Scotland who are not in education, training or employment. Over 60% have been identified as facing significant and multiple barriers to finding work including recently leaving care, drug and alcohol issues, homelessness, convictions and/or a lack of qualifications. Through our experiential skills development work, we support young people to gain meaningful qualifications, the social skills to successfully manage a range of relationships and the confidence to flourish in employment or further training.

Scran Academy has supported many young people to overcome barriers to thrive in education, employment, further training and wider life. The majority of participants have gone on to secure full-time employment or further training, with several continuing to access support from the team. For some young people, the primary identified positive outcomes has meant exiting the care system, securing independent living or reengaging into full time school timetable.

Founded by local people in 2017 as a Community Interest Company and transitioning to become a registered charity in January 2020, Scran Academy has an ambitious commitment to innovate and grow in order to help even more young people across Edinburgh. This has included leading a citywide covid meals response, securing a Scran Café, operating a catering truck (Scran Van) and a range of youth-led social enterprise programmes.

We are looking for a Chief Executive who can build on our success and lead the development of the organisation and its services forward at this exciting time in the story of Scran Academy. We want someone who can oversee the development and delivery of effective, high quality and innovative services that made a real difference to young people’s lives, whilst maintaining the ability to provide strategic vision for the organisation.

The successful applicant will be able demonstrate experience and competency in leading and developing teams and individuals through periods of change. They will also be effective in building strong and effective relationships with partnership and wider stakeholders. They must be able to demonstrate innovation and a genuine passion for supporting young people, and will be committed to the values and ethos of the third sector.
