About the role

The Faculty of Advocates is the professional body to which all Advocates in Scotland belong and has a rich and significant history dating back to the sixteenth century.  It promotes and supports the administration of justice and the rule of law in Scotland and is specifically responsible for prescribing the criteria and procedures for admission/removal to the public office of Advocates and regulating the professional practice, conduct and discipline of Advocates.  The Faculty also maintains the Advocates’ Library, and an extensive collection of artworks and artefacts connected with Scotland’s legal history.  The organisation also consists of Faculty Services Limited which provides a range of administrative and other support services to Advocates.

Due to retirement, the Faculty now seeks to appoint a Chief Executive who will report to the office-bearers and will be responsible for the management of a senior leadership team across the entire organisation which consists of c130 staff who are supporting 450 members (Advocates).  The role has an exciting, broad ranging and demanding remit which will include both internal as well as externally facing responsibilities. The CEO will be accountable for all strategic, operational, financial and functional activities across the Faculty of Advocates and Faculty Services Limited.  They will consolidate, enhance and develop the work of the Faculty through ongoing analysis and driving a clear unambiguous strategy of improvement.

Suitable candidates will be able to demonstrate outstanding management and communication skills and will have the personal and professional qualities required to manage change. These will include, but not be limited to; enthusiasm, vision and flair, strong interpersonal skills, planning and organisational abilities, and both rigour and resilience.  A legal qualification is not a requirement.
