‘Providing access to justice for over 500 years’

The Faculty of Advocates is the professional body to which all Advocates in Scotland belong and has a rich and significant history dating back to the sixteenth century.  It promotes and supports the administration of justice and the rule of law in Scotland and is specifically responsible for prescribing the criteria and procedures for admission/removal to the public office of Advocates and regulating the professional practice, conduct and discipline of Advocates.  The Faculty also maintains the Advocates’ Library, the Abbotsford Library and an extensive collection of artworks and artefacts connected with Scotland’s legal history.  The organisation also consists of Faculty Services Limited which provides a range of administrative and other support services to Advocates.

Following a review of their management structure the decision has been taken to appoint a Chief Executive, who will report to the Dean and be responsible for the management of a senior leadership team across the entire organisation which consists of c130 staff who are supporting 450 members (Advocates).  The role, which will be tasked with safeguarding and guiding the Faculty through the design and implementation of a new strategic plan, will therefore have an exciting, broad ranging and demanding remit which will include both internal as well as externally facing responsibilities.

Suitable candidates will be able to demonstrate the personal and professional qualities required to manage change, these will include, but not be limited to; vision and flair, strong interpersonal skills, planning and organisational abilities, and both rigour and resilience.  A legal qualification is not a requirement.
