The Royal Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh (the Merchant Company) is a charitable organisation for business and professional people which has been enriching the life of Scotland’s capital for more than 340 years. The original purpose of the Company was to protect trading rights in the city and, over the centuries, it has evolved into a membership organisation with a wide range of activities.
We are an active membership organisation and one of Scotland’s largest charitable organisations. We support 250 elderly Edinburgh residents with a pension and small grants as well as disadvantaged young people with educations opportunities and maintenance grants. Over 5,500 pupils are taught in our schools where around 10% of the pupils benefit from more than £3.4 million in bursary support annually. We also provide 92 residential homes for individuals and families at affordable rents and support young businesses in their early years with grants and mentoring support.
The Company plays a central role in the civic life of Edinburgh and is Scotland’s pre-eminent livery company.
Over the last 12-18 months a new Strategic Plan has been developed and is in the early stages of its implementation. The plan provides a clear road map for achieving our objectives and is arranged around three main strategic pillars: Charity; Members; and Company. Briefly the plan is to increase the quantity and quality of the charitable contribution we make, to enhance the membership experience for our members and to secure the ongoing relevance and viability of the Company as an active, 21st century organisation. Our actions in each of these areas are underpinned by our ongoing commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
This is an exciting period for the Company and an opportune time to strengthen our team through the appointment of a new Finance and Compliance Manager. The person we appoint will play a crucial role in the implementation of our plans and in helping us meet the challenges which lie ahead. The role has a very broad remit and is of critical importance to the delivery of our ambitions.
You will play an important role in the Royal Merchant Company, contributing to the provision of an excellent Finance function with attention to detail, excellent IS skills, great interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a small team with a “one team” ethos.
You will be responsible for:

- improving accounting systems, internal controls and compliance
- liaising with auditors, tax advisers, investment managers, administration managers, property agents and regulatory bodies
