The Faculty of Advocates ensures that the people of Scotland, regardless of wealth, background or location, have access to the very best independent, objective legal advice. The Faculty has been at the forefront of legal excellence since 1532 and regulates the training and professional practice, conduct and discipline of advocates.

Members of the Faculty and the public have access to the Advocates Library which is widely regarded as the finest working law library in the British Isles. It contains a comprehensive range of materials built up over more than three hundred years. The Advocates Library holds an historical collection of early modern European legal books, dating from the first printed works, of world-class importance.

The Library and its collection is owned by a separate Scottish Charity – The Faculty Fund whose charitable purposes include the advancement of education, the advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science, and the advancement of human rights, conflict resolution or reconciliation.

The Faculty is now seeking two independent Trustees to sit on the Board of the Faculty Fund. In part these appointments are to modernise the Governance of the Faculty Fund and ensure it is managed according to best practice whilst also bringing independent voices to bear. The Faculty is also considering a major programme to modernise the Library and ensure it remains fit for purpose as a working library in the 21st century. This is likely to be a multi phase project running over a number of years and once complete will form a key part of the infrastructure for the administration of justice in Scotland. The Faculty is seeking independent Trustees who would be able to support this project.

Time commitment will be approximately 12 days per year.

We are looking for candidates with previous experience of Board level appointments, preferably in the third sector.  Of key significance is an ability to bring an independent voice to bear in a traditional organisation.  Experience of fund raising/profile building to support funding in capital projects.  Additionally, a genuine interest and enthusiasm in the Library, its place in the fabric of the Scottish legal sector and securing its long term viability as a working law library.

Closing date for applications is Friday 17th June
